James' father was John Mather and his mother was Margaret Ann Seal.  His paternal grandparents were James Chadwick Mather and Sarah Charlton. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Charlton, Alexis, Sarah, Alice, Elizabeth and Margaret A.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 49 on August 3rd, 1909 in Massachusetts (MA).²
