James' father was John Mather and his mother was Alice Whittle. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Bradshaw. He had a brother and five sisters, named Thomas, Sarah, Elizabeth, Betsy, Edith and Fanny. He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
