Betsy's father was John Mather and her mother was Alice Whittle.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Bradshaw. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Sarah, Elizabeth, Edith and Fanny.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.  She died at 3 months old in January 1862 in Worsley.  She was buried on January 28th, 1862 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).²
