Elizabeth's father was John Mather and her mother was Alice Whittle.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Bradshaw. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Sarah, Betsy, Edith and Fanny.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.  She died at the age of 2 in March 1862 in Worsley.
