George was born in March 1866 in Bolton.1  George's father was Simon Mather and his mother was Jane Wolstencroft.  His paternal grandparents were Simon Mather and Ellen Brooks Unsworth. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Frederick, Alphonso, Ellen, Henrietta and Margaret. He had an adopted sister named Martha. He had a half-brother named Robert.
