Ellen's father was Simon Mather and her mother was Jane Wolstencroft. Her paternal grandparents were Simon Mather and Ellen Brooks Unsworth. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Frederick, Alphonso, George, Henrietta and Margaret. She had an adopted sister named Martha. She had a half-brother named Robert.

  In 1871, Ellen had left home and was a lodger, a factory operative with George and Ann Obersby at Strawberry Hill, Bolton.
  
  1 Sep 1777, Ellen, aged 21 and spinster of 47 Ramwell Street, daughter of Simon Mather a weaver, married Henry Smith, aged 23, a coal miner at Bolton St Peter. Frederick Mather and Maria Coulthard were their witnes.
  
  Ellen and Henry had two children James and Ada who were with Henry and Mary Smith in 1891, so Ellen may have died and Henry remarried.
