Edward was born on February 3rd, 1853 in Billinge and his baptism took place on February 9th, 1853 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Edward's father was James Mather and his mother was Ellen Moyers.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Margaret (Peggy) Mather; his maternal grandparents were Edward Moyers and Tabitha Mather. He had a brother and a sister, named James and Tabitha.  He was the youngest of the three children.
