Charles' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Alice Entwistle. He had six brothers and two sisters, named John, John, Edward, James, Richard, Thomas, Mary and Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 27 in October 1819 in Quarlton.  He was buried on November 1st, 1819 at St. Anne (Turton).²
