Allen was born in March 1850 in Atherton and his baptism took place on March 31st, 1850 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).1 2  Allen's father was John Mather and his mother was Margaret Baxter (Melling).  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Melling and Betty Baxter. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, John, Edwin and Selina.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 2 in March 1852 in Atherton.3
