Selina was born in December 1847 in Atherton and her baptism took place on September 24th, 1848 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).1 2  Selina's father was John Mather and her mother was Margaret Baxter (Melling).  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Melling and Betty Baxter. She had five brothers named Allen, Thomas, James, John and Edwin.  She was the oldest of the six children.
