James was born in 1864 in Farnworth and his baptism took place there on January 29th, 1865.1 2  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Margaret Baxter (Melling).  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Melling and Betty Baxter. He had four brothers and a sister, named Allen, Thomas, John, Edwin and Selina.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
