Edwin's father was John Mather and his mother was Margaret Baxter (Melling).  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Melling and Betty Baxter. He had four brothers and a sister, named Allen, Thomas, James, John and Selina.  He was the youngest of the six children.
