Thomas was born in September 1857 in Chowbent and his baptism took place on September 27th, 1857 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).1 2  Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Margaret Baxter (Melling).  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Melling and Betty Baxter. He had four brothers and a sister, named Allen, James, John, Edwin and Selina.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
