Thomas' father was Thomas Archer and his mother was Jane Longworth. His maternal grandparents were Robert Longworth and Catherine Mather. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Henry, Thomas, Alice, Sarah and Jane. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
