Mary was born in 1824 in Breightmet.1  Mary's father was Richard Lomax and her mother was Isabel (Isabella) Crompton.  Her paternal grandparents were George Lomax and Catherine Crompton. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Roger, George, James, John, Catherine, Betty and Alice.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.
