George was born in 1829 in Breightmet.1  George's father was Richard Lomax and his mother was Isabel (Isabella) Crompton.  His paternal grandparents were George Lomax and Catherine Crompton. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Roger, James, John, Catherine, Mary, Betty and Alice.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
