Betty was born in 1826 in Breightmet.1  Betty's father was Richard Lomax and her mother was Isabel (Isabella) Crompton.  Her paternal grandparents were George Lomax and Catherine Crompton. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Roger, George, James, John, Catherine, Mary and Alice.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
