Ellen was born in 1883. Ellen's father was Ralph Leyland and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Mather. Her maternal grandparents were James Mather and Esther Pasquill (Pasquell). She had two brothers and a sister, named James, Denis and Florence. She was the oldest of the four children.
