Joseph's father was William Lewis and his mother was Catherine Whalley. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Lewis and Elizabeth Williams; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Whalley and Alice Heyes. He had two brothers named William and Thomas. He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Roger and Mary.
