John was born in 1837 in Harthill.1   John's father was William Lea and his mother was Catherine Sadler.  His paternal grandparents were William Lea and Anne Kynaston. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Job, William, Mary and Frances.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
