Emma was born in 1826 in Harthill and her baptism took place on November 29th, 1826 at All Saints, Harthill.1 2  Emma's father was William Lea and her mother was Jane Stubbs. She had three brothers and six sisters, named John, Thomas, Charles, Sarah, Frances, Mina, Sarah, Anne and Jane.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children. She had a half-brother named William.
