Thomas' father was Philip Hughes Lawrence and his mother was Mary Bennett. His maternal grandparents were Jonathan Bennett and Mary Jones. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Philip, Emily, Maria, Amelia, Mary, Lavinia, Leah and Flora. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 1 in 1861 in Birkenhead.²
