Joseph's father was Joseph Patrick Kearney and his mother was Edith Priscilla Eaton. His maternal grandparents were William Eaton and Priscilla Jellicoe. He had a brother and five sisters, named William, Jean, Nessie, Patricia, Lily and Margaret. He was the fifth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 78 on January 22nd, 2006 in Birkenhead.²
