Thomas was born in March 1856 in Elton.1  Thomas' father was Peter Kay and his mother was Lucy Ward.  His paternal grandparents were James Kay and Betty Moband (tbc). He had a brother and four sisters, named Alfred, Louisa, Alice, Ellen and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
