Louisa was born in March 1849.  Louisa's father was Peter Kay and her mother was Lucy Ward.  Her paternal grandparents were James Kay and Betty Moband (tbc). She had two brothers and three sisters, named Alfred, Thomas, Alice, Ellen and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
