Mary was born in March 1858 in Elton.1  Mary's father was Peter Kay and her mother was Lucy Ward.  Her paternal grandparents were James Kay and Betty Moband (tbc). She had two brothers and three sisters, named Alfred, Thomas, Louisa, Alice and Ellen.  She was the youngest of the six children.
