Sarah was born in May 1808 in Edgworth and her christening took place on May 15th, 1808 at St. Anne (Turton).1  Sarah's father was James Kay and her mother was Betty Holt. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Ralph, John, Thomas, James, Anne and Betty.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
