James was born in 1811 in Edgworth and his christening took place on April 28th, 1811 at St. Anne (Turton).1  James' father was James Kay and his mother was Betty Holt. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Ralph, John, Thomas, Anne, Sarah and Betty.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
