William's father was Peter Jones and his mother was Elizabeth Jellicoe. His maternal grandparents were Edward Jellicoe and Jane Woodward. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, Charles, Ernest, Mary, Anne, Priscilla and Edith. He was the fourth oldest of the eight known children.
