Arthur's father was George Herbert James and his mother was Annie Hilton. His maternal grandparents were John Hilton and Sarah Mather. He had a brother and two sisters, named George, Leila and Marguerita. He was the third oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 73 on June 3rd, 1978 in British Columbia.²
