Robert was born in 1850 in Elton and his baptism took place on August 18th, 1850 at St. Anne (Turton).1 2  Robert's father was John Isherwood and his mother was Dorothy (Dolly) Bently.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Isherwood and Jane Holt. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Peter, Jane, Ellen, Alice, Andrew and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
