Ellen's father was John Isherwood and her mother was Dorothy (Dolly) Bently.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Isherwood and Jane Holt. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Peter, Robert, Jane, Alice, Andrew and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
