Robert was born in 1784 in Edgworth and his baptism took place at St. Anne (Turton). Robert's father was James Isherwood and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Fairbrother. He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Henry, Peter, James, Bennett, Mary, Anne, Betty, Alice, Peggy and Deborah.  He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.
