Mary was born in June 1829 in Liverpool and her baptism took place on June 28th, 1829 at St. Peter (Liverpool).1 2  Mary's father was Thomas Hopley and her mother was Mary Easthope.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Hopley and Margaret Richards. She had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Robert and Ann.  She was the youngest of the four children.

‌Mary and Richard were married in a religious ceremony on July 16th, 1849 at St. Peter (Liverpool).3   They had three sons and two daughters, named Emanuel, Thomas, John, Mary and Margaret.  There are possibly more children.
