Mary's father was Henry Holt and her mother was Betty Greenhalgh.  Her paternal grandparents were William Holt and Mary Barrow. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Henry, James, John, Isaac, Albert, Nancy, Amelia and Nancy.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.
