Ellen was born in 1826 in Turton.1  Ellen's father was John Holt and her mother was Sarah Halliwell.  Her paternal grandparents were George Holt and Betty Bentley. She had a brother and two sisters, named John, Mary and Esther.  She was the oldest of the four known children.

‌Ellen and Robert were married in a religious ceremony on March 23rd, 1851 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2   There are no children.
