Mary's father was Edward Hodgkinson and her mother was Ann Brereton. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Catherine Rushton. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Frederick, Thomas, Edward, Joseph, William, Richard, Catherine, Elizabeth, Lydia and Verria. She had an adopted brother named Walter.
