Frederick's father was Edward Hodgkinson and his mother was Ann Brereton. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Brereton and Catherine Rushton. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Edward, Joseph, William, Richard, Catherine, Mary, Elizabeth, Lydia and Verria. He had an adopted brother named Walter.
