Thomas' father was Alfred Edwin Harrison and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Rowland. His maternal grandparents were John Rowland and Elizabeth Davies. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Charles, Annie and Emma. He was the second oldest of the five children.
