Emma's father was Alfred Edwin Harrison and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Rowland. Her maternal grandparents were John Rowland and Elizabeth Davies. She had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, Charles and Annie. She was the second youngest of the five children.
