Sarah's father was Jethro Hamer and her mother was Martha Jane Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Jane Scowcroft. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Walter, Jethro, Samuel, Edward, Jethro, Ada, Alice, Rachel, Florence and Ethel. She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
