John was born in December 1877 in Bolton.1  John's father was Edward Greenwood and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. He had three brothers and a sister, named Robinson, Fred, Herbert and Annie.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 1 in December 1878 in Bolton.1
