Herbert was born in September 1884 in Chorley.1  Herbert's father was Edward Greenwood and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. He had three brothers and a sister, named Robinson, John, Fred and Annie.  He was the youngest of the five children.
