Fred was born in March 1882 in Chorley.1  Fred's father was Edward Greenwood and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. He had three brothers and a sister, named Robinson, John, Herbert and Annie.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
