William's father was John Gidlow and his mother was Agnes Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Nathan Mather and Alice Makinson. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth and Ellen.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 1 in March 1862 in Blackrod.  He was buried on March 25th, 1862 at St. Katherine (B'rod).³
