Fanny's father was William Garside and her mother was Margaret (Peggy) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were (Ann) Mather and Sarah Jackson. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James, John, William, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, Ellen and Margaret.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
