Ellen was born in July 1860 in Doffer Fold.1  Ellen's father was William Garside and her mother was Margaret (Peggy) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were (Ann) Mather and Sarah Jackson. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James, John, William, Fanny, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary and Margaret.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
