John's father was William Garside and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Mather.  His maternal grandparents were (Ann) Mather and Sarah Jackson. He had two brothers and six sisters, named James, William, Fanny, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, Ellen and Margaret.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
