Margaret's father was William Garside and her mother was Margaret (Peggy) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were (Ann) Mather and Sarah Jackson. She had three brothers and five sisters, named James, John, William, Fanny, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary and Ellen.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
