John's father was James Fogg and his mother was Maria Mather. His paternal grandparents were John Fogg and Harriet Rosthorn; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Isherwood. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, James, Samuel, Ellen, Christiana, Harriet, Susannah and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the nine children.
